An aesthetic approach to protect people from sun
Apr 2024 – Jun 2024
Although many people in NZ utilise sun protection, they still struggle to fully protect themselves from the excessive sunlight
How might we minimise people's inconvenience due to UV exposure when they go out and help them protect themselves from the sunlight more effectively?
To create a simple, engaging and creative sun protection method
that helps people easily avoid sunlight.
Our target audience includes young female adults in New Zealand - aged around 18-23
“Is there any way I can avoid sunlight in a natural, easy way?”
This is the Solaris device. It detects sunlight through the front screen and informs users how many minutes they have left to safely spend time outside without being overexposed. The sun icon on the right visually represents the user’s current level of sun exposure. The button on the back serves as the power switch, and the speaker holes at the bottom are used to send alerts. The device is rechargeable via a USB-C cable.
The device needs to be connected to a smartphone to be used. Once it detects sunlight, the timer starts automatically (but it can also be activated manually).
The Solaris app lets users track how long they've been exposed to the sun and notifies them whether the exposure time has remained within a safe range. Each day, users can also log their symptoms and how they feel, allowing them to monitor changes in their health over time.
When users exceed their set sunlight exposure time, an alarm will sound, and the device will send an alert. This helps users recognize when it's time to go indoors, preventing overexposure.
